Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 HCSB
I recently upgraded my cell phone and was delighted to find one of its features is a flashlight created by the camera flash. I have already used this feature several times. Recently I was looking for an item in our storage area, and I used the light to shine into boxes to visualize the contents inside. I found it helpful to have the extra light to illuminate the way.
Jesus was probably teaching in the area of the Temple where the offerings were placed. It was also the place where candles were burning to symbolize the pillar of light that led the Israelites in the wilderness. In context, Jesus referred to Himself as the Light of the world. Just as the pillar of fire led the Israelites, Jesus lights the way for those who believe in Him. The pillar of light represented God’s presence and Jesus brings God’s presence to all mankind.
Challenge: Are you living in the light or are you still in the dark? We live in a dark world filled with sin. Only Jesus can light the way and help us avoid the sin and darkness of our world.
